Designed by Christopher Dresser for Minton’s LTD China Staffordshire, England in a style known as cloisonne. The pot decorated with a top band of blue simulating sky with Japan-esque stylized clouds above a sea filled with colorful carp and stylized flowers and plants, all figures outlined with a fine line of gold to simulate the wire in cloisonne enamel. Pot is mounted atop feet simulating the head of a bird returning with an “S” scroll.
The interior glazed in a soft green with a gold top edge. Christopher Dresser (1834-1904) was a Scottish designer and design theorist, and a pivotal figure in the aesthetic movement. He worked in this style through several media including ceramics and pottery. He was influenced greatly by the decorative arts of Japan and was fortunate to travel to Japan for 4 months during 1876 and 1877 logging approximately 2000 miles. This trip was recorded in “Japan, It’s Architecture, Art and Art-manufacturer’s.” During this journey he represented South Kensington Museum and was commissioned by Tiffany’s of NY to form a collection of art objects. In Japan Dresser was received by the Emperor and was treated as a guest of the nation. This cachepot is a fine example of the ware he designed for Minton’s known a “Cloisonne.” SIZE: 9″ h, 9″ dia. ]]>Price guide to Derby dinner services, breakfast and dessert services including those by Royal Derby. Prices often depend on number of items in a service, rarity of pattern and condition.
The production of Derby porcelain dates from the first half of the 18th century, although the authorship and the exact start of the production remains today as a matter of conjecture. The oldest remaining pieces in the late 19th century bore only the words “Darby” and “Darbishire” and the years 1751-2-3 as proof of place and year of manufacture. More important is the fact that the production of porcelain in Derby predates the commencement of the works of William Duesbury, started in 1756 when he joined Andrew Planche and John Heath to create the Nottingham Road factory, which later became the Royal Crown Derby. ]]>Below are some examples of the diamond registration marks used on British antiques and a list of date letters and months for you to identify. Some exceptions were made but overall these are an ideal way of identifying the marks.
Diamond registration marked used between 1842 to 1867
This diamond registration mark was found on a Minton ceramic ware. The Roman numerals at the top, IV, signify that the item is ceramic. The “z” which is underneath signifies the year 1860. Please see below for the complete list of year letters. The “H” stands for the month of April, the 12 is the day and the 4 represents the parcel number. Rd stands for the word Registered.
Diamond registration mark used between 1868 to 1883
In 1868 the registration mark changed slightly. The upper Roman numeral stayed the same eg IV for ceramics but the day moved to the spot underneath the classification and the year moved to the right. In the example on the left the I stands for the year 1872. The E stands for the month of May and the parcel number is on the left.
